THE SMB LANDSCAPE IN NUMBERS

Small and medium-sized businesses form the backbone of every modern economy. In the Netherlands alone—one of Europe's most digitalized nations—nearly 2 million SMBs drive the majority of employment and economic output.

Total SMB revenue amounts to approximately €520 billion ($565 billion) per year in the Netherlands. The three largest SMB sectors are professional services (24%), trade (19%), and construction (12%). Together, these three sectors account for more than half of all SMB revenue.

The number of SMBs has been growing steadily: +3.1% in 2025, primarily driven by the rise of solo entrepreneurs and digital-first businesses. This growth is expected to continue, partly due to lower barriers to digital business operations.
