CONTENT SCHEDULING
Content scheduling is the primary reason businesses purchase a social media management tool. All three platforms do this well, but the workflow, flexibility and supported platforms differ. We look specifically at the scheduling experience, supported networks and the flexibility of each tool.
Supported social media platforms
The three tools support the major social media networks, but not all to the same extent:
Scheduling experience compared
Hootsuite offers the most robust scheduling experience for power users. The bulk upload via CSV saves enormous amounts of time when you want to schedule dozens of posts at once. The Planner view gives a clear calendar and the streams view is ideal for monitoring multiple accounts simultaneously. The downside: the interface feels busy and can be overwhelming for new users. There is a learning curve of 1-2 weeks.
Buffer wins on simplicity. The queue approach — set fixed posting times and add content to the queue — makes planning intuitive. You have your first post scheduled within 5 minutes. The Instagram grid preview is a unique feature that lets you see how your feed will look before you publish. The downside: no bulk upload, no RSS feeds and more limited options for complex content strategies.
Sprout Social combines power with user-friendliness. The content calendar is visually appealing and clear, with campaign tags that help you categorize content. ViralPost automatically determines the optimal send time based on your specific audience data. The internal notes system lets team members add context to scheduled posts. The downside: the high price makes it overkill for simple scheduling needs.
Scheduling winner: depends on your needs. Buffer for simplicity and speed, Hootsuite for bulk and volume, Sprout Social for strategy and teamwork.
